My chicken, scallion and chive wontons are so delicious and full of flavor! While it’s time consuming, they are absolutely worth it. I like to double this recipe and freeze half for another meal.

Making Homemade Wontons

Homemade wontons seem very daunting, especially if you’ve never made them before! While this isn’t a fast recipe, it is definitely worth the extra time. My favorite flavor of wontons are chicken, scallion, and chive wontons with a spicy chili sauce! The combination, immersed in Asian flavors is just perfection.

This is not a recipe for you if you are in a pinch for time! But if  you have the time and are willing to try, you won’t be disappointed. My goal is to make it feel less daunting so you’ll give it a try! These wontons are delicious, and perfect for an at-home date night, or if you want to impress a friend.

How to Make Chicken, Scallion, & Chive Wontons

Assembling the chicken, scallion, and chive wontons is actually what takes up most of the time! Whenever I make this recipe, I double it and freeze half of it for later. This makes the time invested absolutely worth it! This recipe makes about 70-80 wontons, so settle in (or grab a friend)!

step 1:

Start by adding the chicken, herbs, and seasonings to a food processor. Pulsing it allows the flavor combinations to mix well and incorporate more than if you were to use your hands.

step 2:

Add a spoonful to each wonton wrapper, and fold. Sounds daunting right? Here are three easy steps to help you in this process:

  1. Dip your finger in water and smear along the edges of the wonton wrapper gently.
  2. Fold the wrapper in half to create a triangle shape.
  3. Take the two bottom edges and wrap them under to overlap. Add a dap of water on the bottom edges to make them stick together.

step 3:

Now for the easy part! Cook them in boiling water for 5-7 minutes, and set aside. You can also cook them in soup to make a delicious wonton soup. Make the spicy chili sauce, and pour over top. Top with more chives and scallions, and enjoy!

Tips for Chicken, Scallion, & Chive Wontons

  • Make wonton soup: Bring a pot of chicken stock and water to a boil. Add wontons and salt and white pepper. When the wontons float to the top (approximately 5 minutes), add a cup of cold water and cook for a few more minutes, until wontons float to the topOnce wontons float to the top again, add soy sauce and sesame oil.
  • Less heat: you can omit the spicy chili oil if it’s too much for you! It’s still delicious in soy sauce and fresh herbs.
  • Pork wontons: you can also substitute for pork instead of chicken! Using ground pork also adds depths of flavors.
  • Freezing: these are good in the freezer for up to three months! I wouldn’t suggest freezing longer (they don’t last long in my freezer).
